Bangladesh Election Commission has been established under Article 118 of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. There will be an Election Commission of Bangladesh with Chief Election Commissioner and maximum four commissioners. If the election commission is formed with more than one election commissioner, the chief will act as the president of the election commission. Subject to the provisions of the Constitution, the term of the Chief Election Commissioner and any Election Commissioner is five years from the date of assuming office.
Article 118 to Article 126 of the Constitution provides for the establishment of the Election Commission, the duties of the Election Commission, the officers of the Election Commission, one voter list for each constituency, eligibility for inclusion in the voter list, time for holding elections, the power of Parliament to make provisions regarding elections, electoral laws and electoral validity and Reference is made to the assistance of the Executive Authority to the Election Commission.
There is an independent secretariat to support the Election Commission of Bangladesh. Under the Secretariat there is a National Identity Registration Division for providing services related to National Identity Card and an Electoral Training Institute for implementing all kinds of training programs under the Election Commission which is managed under the control of a Director General.Further, to support the Secretariat, there are Regional Election Officer offices in ten regions, Senior District Election Officer/District Election Officer offices in 64 districts and Upazila/Thana Election Officer offices in all upazilas and thanas.The main work of the upazila/ police station election officers is to assist the divisional and district election offices in election related work. Also, our aim is to provide all kinds of services related to national identity card and all kinds of services in all kinds of elections including making new voters.
